Familiar Spirits vs. The Holy Spirit

What is meant by “Familiar Spirits”?

Familiar spirits are demonic spirits that are intimate and excessively informal with a person. Often when a person thinks that no one is aware of it, they will get involved with the thoughts of the familiar spirit. The spirit will be very familiar with the person’s thinking patterns.

They are very familiar with the behavior and patterns of a person’s sinful life.

They’ll make us think thoughts such as, “I’m so lonely today” or “my pastor just ignored me; I guess he does not like me.” There can be all sorts of different negative thoughts. These thoughts can prevent us from walking in our purpose.

The ONLY power we should be under is the power of God. The only spirit we should be communing with is the Holy Spirit.

So many people have no idea where these thoughts come from. They have no idea that those thoughts really should not be there. They have no idea that we have the ability to shut those thoughts down.

    Indicators of a familiar spirit

Secret white eyes finger on lipsDoing questionable things in secret
♦ Hidden thought patterns
♦ Negative behavior around others
♦ Having behaviors that others are not there to see.  (No matter what you think you have been doing in secret, nothing is hidden. Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely.        Hebrews 12:1a )

    Examples of a familiar spirit

You can identify the familiar spirit by the emotion they generate within your life. If a thought does not have love, joy and peace in it, it could be from a familiar spirit. God said, You shall have no other gods before me.    Exodus 20:3.     Those thoughts without love, joy and peace could be like having another god before God.

Instead of having the tender, loving thoughts of God within us, we could have familiar spirits giving us thoughts that prevents us from moving forward into the deeper things of the Kingdom.

James asked, Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?     James 3:11 . The answer is yes, if someone is a part time Christian being controlled by a familiar spirit.

A familiar spirit could manifest itself in something like addiction to romance novels or addiction to pornography. Or it could be something more subtle such as feeling of bitterness or a constant need for affirmation.

A workaholic can be that way because of a familiar spirit. They get emotional fulfillment from their work instead of a relationship with God.

Mediums — speaking with the “dead”

When a medium says she is speaking with your dead grandmother, she is not speaking with your dead grandmother. She is getting information from your dead grandmother’s familiar spirit. The familiar spirit knows all sort of things about the thinking patterns and other details that were in your grandmother’s life.

Gossip

One familiar spirit that is far too common and divisive is gossip. It manifests as a need for negative information about other people.

Christ within us

As well as the familiar spirits, we have Jesus inside of us. A monster and Jesus are sitting in the same room so to speak. His thoughts should drown out the demonic thoughts!

We can decide to whose thoughts we should yield
♦ in our hearts,
♦ in our minds and
♦ in our actions.

Something can start with a little thought in our hearts. Then we can meditate upon it for long periods in our minds. We can end up brooding over it so long that it becomes an action in the form of a sin.

Alternately, we can start with a little thought of love, joy and peace in our hearts. Then we can meditate upon it for long periods in our minds. We can end up thinking over it so long that it becomes an action that glorifies God and makes His heart smile.

    We can be set free

Then Jesus said, Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.   Matthew 11:28 .   My yoke is easy and my burden is light.     Matthew 11:30 .

Rather than yielding to that little thought in our heart, we can go to the court of heaven and get clean. We can go there and then the sin can be totally removed from our lives.

How do we get out of the control of the familiar spirits? We practice. We can speak the Word of God to them.

One particular man fights the familiar spirits in his life by visualizing their demise. He’ll take a clump of dirt and pulverize it with a hammer. Then he will blow the fine dust away and declare to the demons that they are gone like that dust.

Another thing that man did was write the names of the familiar spirits on paper and nail them to a wooden cross. He decided to carry a personal war against the familiar spirits in his life. He would go into the courtroom of God and command that the familiar spirits must withdraw. He would fight against them until he started feeling better.

In all likelihood, any one familiar spirit has spent years trying to destroy you. So, just consider it payback time and defeat him.

 It starts in the heart

As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.        Proverbs 23:7a

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.        Matthew 12:34b

Millions of dollars worth of research showed that the heart is a greater thinking organism than the human mind. The electromagnetic energy emanating from the heart extends 7 to 9 feet from the body. By contrast, the electromagnetic energy emanating from the mind extends only 7 to 8 INCHES from the body.

The things we look at are what command our attention.  So, ask yourself, “Will it draw me closer to God or closer to a familiar spirit.”
